Choosing And Working With Your Venture Firm

Selecting a venture capital firm can be demanding, but ensuring you pick the right resource for the right reasons can make the task more rewarding. Often entrepreneurs go through what they consider a rigorous vetting process but focus on the wrong criteria. It’s usually a mistake, for example, to pick a venture firm based only on the valuation they offer you, their past portfolio, or firm reputation. As an entrepreneur, you’re establishing a relationship with a partner, not a firm. If the partner you are working with is on eight boards of directors, you won’t get a lot of his time and not have a beneficial relationship regardless of the firm’s reputation. A partner in a smaller or lesser known firm, however, may have the special expertise you’re seeking and much more time to invest, along with the firm’s dollars.
