Often an entrepreneur’s first funding comes, not from a venture capitalist, but rather from an individual—an investor with an interest in a particular business sector or in a promising business person. The reasons that this “angel” provides funding are very different from those of an institutional VC firm, and the resulting expectations are different as well.
